About Taekwondo
The Art and Philosophy of Taekwondo
Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art and modern Olympic sport that focuses on self-defense, discipline, and dynamic kicking techniques.
The word Taekwondo is derived from three Korean words:
- Tae (태) – Foot or kicking techniques
- Kwon (권) – Hand or striking techniques
- Do (도) – The way, philosophy, or path of life
Together, Taekwondo means “The Way of the Foot and Hand.”
However, the concept of “Do” goes far beyond physical techniques. It represents a philosophy of life, emphasizing moral values, respect for others, self-improvement, and harmony between body and mind.
Taekwondo as an Olympic Sport
Taekwondo is proudly recognized as an official Olympic sport under the governance of the World Taekwondo and has been part of the Olympic Games since the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
Today, millions of practitioners around the world practice Taekwondo for sport, self-defense, fitness, and character development.
In Rwanda, Taekwondo is one of the fastest-growing sports and continues to produce talented athletes who compete in national and international competitions.
